August 11-13, 2025:American Fisheries Society National Meeting

San Antonio, TX

It was great to connect with old acquaintances and meet new ones.  So many highlights in this show!

Photo 1: Professor Korey Evans-Jackson receiving his handoff of fish prints from Japan to be displayed at Rice University in October

Photo 2:  Three students came by the booth and each bought a print.  It was so fun to see their connection to each other and to fish!

Other photos:  Aside from talking fish with everyone, my wife and I also took a trip south to Crystal City, TX where both of my parents were placed in the internment camps at the ages of 14 and 20 years.  I was able to see a map of the camps and the location of the family housing on both parents sides.  Japanese Americans, Japanese Pervians (deported from Peru to America-sound familiar?), Italians, and Germans were housed here.  This camp was to contain those Japanese who would be deemed good for trading for our US troops. We learned the Crystal City has 3 distinct histories: the Japanese internment camps, the Mexican-American heritage and migrant worker story, and the large numbers of peoples enlisted in the United States military service.  Good visit.  Somber visit.  Almost forgotten history visit.

A highlight was visiting with a former student of the Aquarium Science Program at Oregon Coast Community College and who now has a blooming algae and bacteria business for healthy fish right here in Colorado.  Great to see you Kenneth Wingerter!

Collection & Lab Trip
November/December, 2024
Okinawa, Japan

In a fantastic opportunity to learn about Okinawa fishes, Dr. Kory Evans-Jackson invited me to print fishes that were collected in Okinawa as part of a research project investigating jaw development in diverse species.
Over 40 species I never printed before were made available!  This is a pre-framed example.  Thank you to Dr. Evans-Jackson and his lab partners.

These prints will be on display at Rice University in October, 2025.

American Fisheries Society
September, 2024
Honolulu, HI

Arriving a week early, my wife and I collected our specimens from the water, from researchers, and from Chinatown as bringing framed artwork to Hawaii was not possible.  Then I printed everyday and night before the AFS conference and we hung the art work on clothes pins.  We had a fantastic time in beautiful Hawaii learning about the culture, the flora and fauna, the food, and the geography.  What a beautiful place and people!
